We arrived at Horcones trail head, at 8,900 feet, around 2:00. When we arrived, we checked in and each received a garbage bag and a wag bag. It was to our pleasant surprise that, contrary to what we had read, there was no charge for either of these bags, they were already included with our permits. We headed out from Horcones trail head for the 6 mile hike to Confluencia, at 11,100 feet, our first camp. This hike went all right, we stopped frequently due to my stomach and the 70-80 pounds on each of our backs. We managed to get to camp in about 3 and a half hours. Confluencia was impressive! All of the guide companies had enormous base camp tents set up, along with a bathroom; one even had a volleyball court. There was a medical tent, and a ranger station. We checked in and were told that before leaving Confluencia, we needed to check into the medical tent and have them sign off our permits. There was a separate bathroom for those of us that were unguided, which was only 5 of us at the time: Chris and I, Olli and Andy (2 guys from England, who were heading to base camp the next day), and Juan Diego (A guy only out for a 3 day hike). They also had running water here coming off of the mountain, with a picnic table set up right next to the faucet. This made making dinner quite nice, and we enjoyed a pasta side and some tea and hot chocolate with this abundance of easily accessible water. We got our tent set up and made ourselves comfortable for a couple of nights here.
